The Athletes BACK POCKET
The Human Behind Sports
The sports pipeline has never been healthier. Youth sports is a multibillion-dollar industry, with expansion fueled by investment in new facilities, new programs, and record participation numbers. College sports is in the middle of a seismic shift from amateurism to a hybrid pay model, with Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deals reshaping what it means to be a student-athlete. Pro sports keeps posting record growth, year after year. By any financial measure, sports is experiencing a revolution. By human measure, we need to catch up.
Millions of people play sports, and the benefits are well documented. Sports teach physical skills, leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving. They build confidence and community. None of that is in question. But every person who plays a sport is still just that — a person.
Athletes are human and by default experience highs and lows. Ask a parent whose 10-year-old just got cut from a travel team what comes next. Ask a college sophomore who lost their scholarship after one bad season. Ask a 28-year-old who just got released from their pro contract. On the flip side, there is the 16-year-old who was recruited for a pro sports team, college freshman drafted in the first round and a 19 year old who just won the biggest soccer championship in the world! The journey is a roller coaster. and there is no map. This blog will share specific insights, some real principles, and an occasional honest reframe to maybe help make that journey a little easier.
